Martin’s Brookmyre Page.

First up: Why Brookmyre? Well have you ever come across an author who you knew other people were going to enjoy but would never get the chance to since they did not read that type of book? That is why I’m creating this page. Christopher Brookmyre is the author of several books that feature good Scottish characters who you will have met and talked to if you’ve lived here for any length of time. Okay most of them are expanded but that’s what you expect from any author (the prospect of a real life story fills me with horror!)

I first encountered him when his “Quite Ugly One Morning” was suggested as a good read by Maxim magazine (I read it for the reviews not the pictures of women in underwear-honest!) but since there are several suggestions each month and I never follow them up nothing was made of it. Maxim also recommended his next book “Country of the Blind” and since I was downtown with nothing to read while having Lunch on a 2-day tax course I picked it up and was hooked.

I am the first to admit that I read relatively few good books but the use of the Glasgow patois when folk were speaking really drew me in and held me. I had never encountered this particular style of writing before. Like I said I’m not well read. This held me while the story was laid down and then about half way through the book it explodes into action with things flying around all over the place. Read this book, you owe it to yourself.
