What Is Advanced Squad Leader?

Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) is a board game (game played on a board with counters) which is based upon World War II Squad Level combat. It is produce by Multi Man Publishing and owned by Hasbro.

Right that’s the boring technical stuff out of the way, if you want to find out more about the game then click on the link below to the MMP site.

Who am I playing with?

Step forward Toni Gibson and Steven Cook my two partners in crime.

What are we playing at the moment?

17/11/01

We have now played “Blood Enemies” from the journal. A kicking infantry fight on Board 24. Good clean fun with units breaking disrupting and rallying all over the place. A little tough on the Yugoslav forces but with good play and a little luck it is definitely winnable.

Well we are no longer playing “In The Bag” Abandoning the game at turn 7 after getting thoroughly hacked off with it. The scenario has tough exit victory conditions on the US player but there is no question as to whether he can kick Germen ass, merely how quickly he can do it. Not one of my top ten scenarios.

Having just come out of a game of Red Barricades we are delving into the delights of Journal 3 scenarios.

The current treat is “In The Bag” featuring a 2 combat command attack by US forces against German defenders.
This scenario seems to be ideally suited to 3-player use.  One person takes the defending Germans and one each of the combat commands.

After playing serious infantry city fights, the change is interesting to say the least. I have forgotten how to make full use of combined arms and so am rather disjointed in my use of infantry and armour.

Luckily Toni is defending and I can rely on his terrible dice to get me out of sticky situations! 3 Panzershreck shots, 3 Panzershreck malfunctioned! That’s the sort of play I like!

Well it has been 6 years since I last added to this page, so much for good intentions!

We have now acquired another player in the shape of Mr Ian Percy (MrP to all you forumites) and still manage to play most weeks.

For the last 3 years we have also made to “pilgrimage down to Heroes in Blackpool, will we make it this year? Who knows? Certainly Steve has already booked the time off.

With the completion of the system I decided it was high time that I started my own set so have bought beyond Valour (3rd edn with SK style boards) and in the Canadian Dude sale I got Yanks, Croix de Guerr, Hollow Legions and the Last Hurrah.

With the recent addition of AP 3 it’s beginning to look like a decent set. Hopefully I’ll be ableto pick-up For King and Country this coming March to add the Commonwealth forces to the pool.
